We love to read our daughters' blogs. They actually help us keep up with them, and the pictures are fun--we can go back to them whenever we want. And the best part is seeing our granddaughter, Anna-Jane, who lives far away in Colorado. Between the web-cam visits and blogs, we feel a bit closer than just by phone. So, since we enjoy their blogs, we've decided to try blogging, too.

Empty Nest after Girls, Girls, Girls

I'm not sure what 'people' think nowadays, but when Larry and I were newlyweds, the generally accepted 'perfect' family consisted of 2 children: a boy and a girl. And, as our friends had children, they often gave them names starting with the same letter (Brittany and Brandon, Michael and Melanie, etc). I grew up with a sister, and Larry grew up with a brother, so we already broke the proverbial mold before we began adding to the world's population, and then we had 2 daughters, Breeanne and Robin, again not following suit with alliterative names!

At times I wondered, did I miss something by not having a son, not growing up with a brother? Well, it's been fun (and definitely educational!) having a HUSBAND, but it's also been delightful having daughters. I hadn't recently reflected on this sweet blessing till last night, when Robin and I went over to Jeni's house (Robin's sister in law/love--as we call it). Jeni has 2 brothers! Being a new and nursing mommy, she has a 'new' figure to deal with, and she sought our opinions on some outfits for an upcoming event where she will be in front of other people. We enjoyed coffee and cookies, holding Sheridan while suggesting this and that, while Jeni modeled clothes, shoes and jewelry.

Being empty nesters now, I don't have that sweet benefit of gliding into one of the girls' rooms, wearing a different shoe on each foot, asking, "which one looks better?" (holding up one leg for a better viewpoint) or "do you have some earrings that will go with this?" I miss our girls living here of course, but I also miss that easy other opinion, too. Asking Larry gives him apoplexy! He's read too many cartoons where the husband gives horribly honest or unrealistic opinions when his wife asks, "how do I look, honey?" So he just smiles.

Sometimes it's really nice to have that feminine opinion....
